The garden is full of smiling Sunflowers, Zinnias and Dahlias. The bees are in full force enjoying the pollen. I have to admit I am not cutting as usual due to the quantity of bees in the garden. I am not usually fearful of bees, but a couple of weeks ago I was stung repeatedly by a few bees at once. It was scary. Thank God my husband told be to "run".
I was holding the other side of a high tunnel pole we were trying to set up. I felt a very sharp pain and yelled "ow". As more sharp stings kept at me I kept yelling. I did not realize what was causing the pain until I heard my husband yelling instructions to flee the area, that was when i saw the bees swarming around me.
I ran away from the bees all the while thinking, "What makes me think I can run faster than a bee can fly?" When I reached the house I shut myself safely inside, turned around and saw a couple of bees. I turned back to the door and ran outside again. As I was running through the back yard, my husband was instructing me to get the water hose. Just then our Boarder Collie, Really, did her good duty in herding me along and ran directly across my path. I caught myself with my head so hard I felt myself begin to pass-out. All I could think was, "you gotta be kidding me".
My husband ran over with the hose and began spraying me. He asked me if it was ok and I said yes even though the hose had been sitting in the sun all day and the water was very hot. I preferred to be sprayed with the water at any cost by then.
I sat there crying for a moment as the stressful experience was fully understood. Then I began to wonder if being stung by that many bees could cause an allergic reaction. We began slathering me in Drawing Save and calamine lotion. I took an antihistamine, something I have never taken in my life. The pain and itch lasted for over a week. My caution is lasting a bit longer.
Not selling or at least freely sharing my flowers has been a bigger sting. Trying to start a business can be a large task. Trying to start a business during COVID is a confusing task. I wish the flowers were being loved and leaving this garden. I am enjoying them greatly inside and outside my home. I would rather give them away rather than let them sit here. Sunflowers, Zinnia, Dahlias, and Snapdragons; all doing their job in feeding the bees.
